In-Character
Read the following prompt:
The rhythmic lull of hoofbeats are a marching drum to the small group of pioneers and variety of folk you have found yourself amongst, packed into a wobbling wagon. The rolling plains of the Southern Reach and a clear sky stretch out all around you, the buzz of excited chatter a dull wash in your ears as your mind strays to your former life and what has led you here to new lands.
“Nervous?”
You blink, returning to the present moment. A kindly older woman sat near you is smiling warmly with a crinkle to her eyes.
“I can tell it’s your first time. Still remember mine,” she flashes a grin and leans in.
“Tell me my dear, why have you come to the Reach?”
How do you respond (in character)?
The older woman's question pulls a wide, easy smile from Khari, a familiar reflex to mask the deeper currents running through him. He settles deeper into the wagon's rhythmic sway, the creak of the wheels a comforting backdrop to the plains stretching around them.
"Nervous?" he echoes, a light chuckle escaping him. "No, no not nervous. Just… restless to get there. I've always been one for open roads, actually. Grew up mostly on the streets, never had a proper home with four sturdy walls." His tone carries a hint of wistfulness. "Back in the North, where I come from, the streets spiral down the heights of Skykeep. That's where the city's wound tight around stone, but filled with hunger. Food’s scarce when war shadows your gates, you see- and hunger makes you mean if you let it. Real mean..."
He glances around at the other pioneers, a varied lot, finding comfort in their shared journey. "The Reach, it's always been spoken of as a place of new beginnings, of wide-open spaces for folks like me." He leans in, mirroring her confiding posture. "Heard tell that this whole territory opened up after the Great Disappearance – the Aedall, they just… vanished. Left everything behind." He shakes his head slightly, a flicker of something solemn in his golden eyes. "For someone with nothing, an empty land is an invitation, not a warning. A chance to carve out a life that's mine, not just one I clung to to survive."
His smile returns, a touch more genuine this time. "And a chance to find people worth sticking by, too. The folks I knew, growing up… we had to rely on each other, just like those Walljacks do down in the swamps south of The Wall. They've got a way of sticking together, forming those tight-knit pacts, I hear. You got to, when you're out there, just you and your wits." He nods, recalling distant whispers of their cunning. "No matter where I've been, I've always looked for that kind of 'chosen family,' as some Falstoners call it. This Reach, it feels like the kind of place where you can finally put down roots with people, make a place where everyone's got each other's back, instead of just scrambling for crumbs." He straightens up, a glint of optimism in his gaze as he looks towards the distant horizon. "Aye, the Reach. It's a clean slate, and it's there I aim to make my mark."
